Why Farm Solar Is Different

Ground-mount beats roof-mount for farms.

A farm install is not just a bigger residential install. The economics, the racking, the panel selection, and the tax treatment are all different. Here's why it matters:

๐Ÿ“

Ground-mount = unlimited space

Farms have land. Roof-mount systems are capped by available roof area โ€” typically 6-12 kW on a residential home. Ground-mount lets us size the system to match your actual consumption, whether that's 15 kW or 30 kW+. No compromise on production.

โšก

650W panels, not 500W

Residential installs use LONGi Hi-MO 7 500W (optimized for tight roof space). Farm ground-mounts use the LONGi Hi-MO X10 650W โ€” physically larger, higher output per panel, optimized for open land. Same Tier-1 manufacturer, same 30-year warranty, better economics per rack.

๐Ÿ’ผ

Class 43.2 depreciation

Solar equipment for farm operations qualifies for accelerated capital cost allowance under CCA Class 43.2 โ€” effectively letting you write off the full system cost faster than a typical depreciation schedule. Significant tax advantage. Full section below.

๐Ÿ”Œ

Microinverters, not string

Most farm installers switch to string inverters on larger systems to cut cost. We use APsystems DS3 microinverters on every panel โ€” farm and residential alike. Each panel independent. No single point of failure. Panel-level monitoring through the EMA app. Longer warranty, higher energy yield.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Built for Alberta ground conditions

FastRX ground-mount racking rated for Alberta snow loads and wind. Proper soil testing, frost-line footings, engineered layout. Not a DIY kit โ€” this is professional structural work on your property for the next 30 years.

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ

Honest scale assessment

Not every farm should go solar. Operations with very low electricity consumption, heavy shading, or short land-tenure plans may not hit payback. We'll tell you before you sign anything. That's why we decline about 10% of assessments โ€” better than selling you something that doesn't work.

What Farm Solar Powers

Every kilowatt-hour you use qualifies.

Farm solar doesn't have to power one specific thing โ€” Alberta's net metering program credits every kWh you export against every kWh you import. Whatever you're running, solar can offset.

๐ŸŒพ

Grain Operations

Aeration fans, grain drying, augers, grain bins. Harvest-season load spikes that normally blow up your bill.

๐Ÿ„

Cattle & Livestock

Water heaters, heat lamps, ventilation, lighting, feed grinders. Year-round load that solar covers cleanly.

๐Ÿ’ง

Irrigation & Wells

Pivot irrigation, well pumps, pressure systems. Solar production peaks in summer when irrigation runs hardest.

๐Ÿš๏ธ

Shop & Outbuildings

Heated shops, welders, air compressors, lighting, workshop equipment. Big winter loads offset by summer credits.

๐Ÿก

Farmhouse & Residence

Your home load runs alongside everything else. One system covers house, shop, and barn together.

EV Chargers

For Incorporated Farm Operations

Federal & Provincial tax advantages for incorporated farms.

If your farm operates as a taxable Canadian corporation, you may qualify for two significant federal tax benefits on a solar install โ€” the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit (CT ITC) and CCA Class 43.2 accelerated depreciation. Together, these can materially compress your system's after-tax payback. Here's what's actually true, without the marketing spin.

CT ITC โ€” up to 30% refundable credit

A federal refundable tax credit on the capital cost of new clean technology equipment (solar panels, inverters, batteries, wiring). The rate is 20% by default, or 30% if your installer complies with federal prevailing-wage and apprenticeship labour requirements. Available for equipment made available for use between March 28, 2023 and December 31, 2034. Phase-out begins in 2034.

Class 43.2 โ€” accelerated CCA

Qualifying clean energy equipment falls into CCA Class 43.2 (50% declining-balance rate) versus the slower schedules for typical farm capital. The Accelerated Investment Incentive (AII) can enhance the first-year deduction. One important detail โ€” if you claim the CT ITC, the CCA is calculated on the post-credit cost, not the gross system price.

Eligibility โ€” incorporation required

Both programs are restricted to taxable Canadian corporations, partnerships whose partners are all taxable Canadian corporations, and certain REITs. Sole proprietorships, unincorporated farms, and individuals do not qualify. If you're thinking about solar and haven't incorporated your farm, it's worth a conversation with your accountant before signing a contract.

Payback impact โ€” significant but case-specific

For incorporated farms capturing both the CT ITC and accelerated CCA, after-tax payback can be meaningfully shorter than the same system on a residential basis. Exactly how much shorter depends on your tax rate, your operation's income, and whether your installer qualifies for the full 30% rate. We'll model your specific numbers during the assessment โ€” no templated figures.

If your farm isn't incorporated โ€” these federal tax programs don't apply, but solar still delivers direct bill offset through Alberta's net metering program, and you can finance through CEIP (property-tax financing, available in many Alberta municipalities) or Financeit ($0 down). The equipment, install quality, and warranty are identical. We'll give you an honest quote either way.

This is a summary โ€” not tax advice. The CT ITC, Class 43.2 rules, labour compliance requirements, and eligibility criteria are complex and subject to Canada Revenue Agency interpretation. Always verify specific tax treatment with your accountant before making financial decisions based on projected credits or depreciation. Stellar Upgrades installs CT ITC and Class 43.2-qualifying equipment โ€” only your accountant can confirm how the programs apply to your specific operation.

Farm Solar FAQ

Questions farmers actually ask.

It depends entirely on your current electricity consumption. A small rural residence might need 10 kW (16 panels). A mid-sized mixed operation with a heated shop, grain bins, and farmhouse might need 20-30 kW (32-46 panels). The largest farm system we've installed to date is 29.9 kW (46 panels) for an operation that was paying $600-800/month before solar. We size systems to match your actual annual kWh usage โ€” not some generic template. You bring us 12 months of power bills; we engineer from there.
Farm ground-mount systems typically range from approximately $30,000 for a smaller 10 kW system up to $85,000-$100,000+ for a larger 30 kW operation, before financing and before Class 43.2 tax treatment. Pricing varies based on ground conditions, distance from the electrical service, trenching requirements, and whether panel upgrades are needed. Every Stellar proposal includes full line-item pricing, 30-year financial projections with adjustable rate assumptions, and clear payback modeling. No inflated numbers. No hidden costs.
Usually, yes โ€” for farms specifically. Ground-mount gives you full control over orientation (true south), tilt angle (optimized for Alberta latitude), and row spacing. Barn roofs are often wrong orientation, wrong angle, or structurally not rated for panel weight plus snow load. Barn roofs also age โ€” when the roof needs replacement in year 15, you pay to remove and reinstall the entire array. Ground-mount avoids all of that. The exception is smaller farm residences with good south-facing roof and shorter payback goals โ€” we'll tell you which makes sense during the assessment.
From signed contract to permission-to-operate (PTO), typical timeline is 6-12 weeks. Site assessment and engineering: 1-2 weeks. Permitting and utility interconnect paperwork: 3-6 weeks (this varies by municipality and by utility). Actual install on your property: 3-5 days for most farm-scale systems. Larger 30+ kW systems may take longer if trenching or panel upgrades are needed. We handle all permits, utility paperwork, and final inspection โ€” you don't need to chase any of it.
It depends on how critical uninterrupted power is to your operation. Standard grid-tied systems โ€” without a battery โ€” shut off during a grid outage as a safety requirement under the Canadian Electrical Code. If you lose power, the solar panels stop producing until the grid is restored. For most farm operations, this is acceptable because outages are short. For operations where losing power during calving season, harvest, or critical livestock operations would cause serious damage, we recommend adding an EP Cube battery backup to keep critical loads running. See our battery backup page for details.
Exactly the same way it works for residential โ€” Alberta's micro-generation program (commonly called net metering) credits you kWh-for-kWh on the surplus you export to the grid. Summer production typically exceeds farm consumption and builds credits. Winter consumption draws those credits down. For most properly-sized farm systems, this results in net-zero annual electricity costs. The program is available through all Alberta utilities including FortisAlberta (most rural areas), ENMAX, EPCOR, and ATCO. Maximum system size under the program is 5 MW, which is far larger than any residential or typical farm install.
Three things matter on a farm install. First, we use microinverters on every panel (not string inverters) โ€” most farm installers switch to string at scale to save money, but string inverters create a single point of failure on a $60,000+ investment. Second, Jordan Walsh is a Red Seal Master Electrician who personally leads or inspects every install โ€” 100% in-house crews, no subcontracting. Third, we're honest about when solar doesn't make sense for a specific farm and will tell you before you sign a contract. We've done 15+ farm and rural ground-mount installs across Alberta since 2018. 5.0 Google rating. Meet the team.
Yes. Farm systems can be financed through Financeit ($0 down, rates from 6.99%, terms up to 20 years) โ€” often with monthly payments lower than your current power bill. Cash purchase receives a 10% discount on system cost. Some farm operators structure the purchase through their farm corporation to capture both the Class 43.2 tax treatment and favourable corporate financing. We can walk through financing options during the assessment. See financing details.
Call us anyway. Larger farm projects often justify the additional travel time โ€” we've completed installs outside our normal radius when the project made sense. Smaller installs further away may not be economical for us to service, and we'll be honest about that rather than taking the job and cutting corners to make it work. (780) 200-5265.
