TL;DR. Yes. Gemstone permanent lighting is designed by a Calgary company for exactly this climate: the lights are sealed to IP67, the track is aluminum fastened to the fascia, the cable is UV-rated, and the only electronics you ever touch live indoors. Cold is not what kills outdoor lighting in Alberta; water that gets in and then freezes is, and a sealed, properly installed system gives it nowhere to get in. Every Alberta homeowner has the same first question about permanent lighting, and it is a fair one. Strings of seasonal lights fail here every year, garden lights die by February, and anything with a battery gives up at −25°C. So before you spend three or four thousand dollars on a system that lives outside all year, you want to know what a Prairie winter actually does to it. Here is the honest answer, part by part.
What cold does to LED lighting, and what it does not
LEDs like the cold. They are semiconductors, and semiconductors run more efficiently and last longer when they are cool; the enemy of an LED is heat, which is why a cheap bulb in a hot enclosed fixture fails early and why the same diode outdoors in January is in the easiest environment it will ever see. Gemstone rates its lights at 50,000 hours, roughly twenty years at seven hours a night, and winter is the part of the year that helps that number rather than hurts it.
What cold punishes is everything around the diode: plastic housings that go brittle and crack, adhesive-mounted strips that let go when the surface contracts, connectors that were never sealed, and any place water can sit. Water gets in during a thaw, freezes overnight, expands, and opens the gap a little wider. Repeat that thirty times over a winter and the light is dead by March. That is the failure mode of most “permanent” strip products sold at big-box stores, and it has nothing to do with the LED.
Snow, ice and the roofline
The track mounts along the fascia, under the roof edge. That placement matters in winter for three reasons:
- Snow slides past it. What comes off the roof comes off the drip edge and falls clear; the channel sits below and behind that line, so it is not carrying snow load the way a gutter is.
- Ice dams form on the roof, not on the track. An ice dam is a roof-and-insulation problem at the eave; the lighting neither causes it nor sits in its path. If you already get dams, tell us during the layout and we keep the track and the wiring away from the spots where meltwater runs.
- Icicles hang from the gutter edge. They form in front of the channel, not through it. Knock them down the way you always have; just do not hook a roof rake or a shovel under the track itself.

The one winter job we do ask of you: if you use a roof rake, pull the snow down the roof plane and stop at the edge, the same as you would to protect a gutter. The track is aluminum, not glass, but it is not a handle.
Wind and hail
Prairie wind takes seasonal lights because they hang from clips. Permanent track is screwed to the fascia along its whole length, so there is nothing for a Chinook to grab and nothing to blow into the neighbour’s yard. Hail hits roof planes and windshields; a channel tucked under the eave is out of the line of fire, which is one more reason we do not run it on the roof surface. When a hailstorm does come through, the lights are the last thing on the house you will be inspecting.

That split is the whole reason the system survives winters that kill everything else: the sensitive electronics are indoors, and what is outdoors is sealed metal and sealed diodes. There are no batteries anywhere, no solar cells on a stake, no timer box on the wall.
What it costs to run in December
Alberta winter nights are long: in Edmonton the sun is down by about 4:15 in the afternoon in December and not back until nearly nine. If you ran a typical 117 ft front at full brightness for sixteen hours a night, that is about 150 watts for sixteen hours, roughly 2.4 kilowatt-hours a day or 72 a month, which at an Alberta all-in residential rate of 16 to 20 cents per kilowatt-hour is about $12 to $14 for the month. Almost nobody runs it that way. Warm white on an evening schedule at partial brightness draws a fraction of full RGB output, and Gemstone’s own published figure for a typical home is $4.34 a month. Either way it is less than the seasonal strings it replaces, and a single strand of old C9 incandescent bulbs can pull more than the whole system.
What actually fails, and why it is usually the install
When a permanent system has a problem in year three, it is almost never a light. It is a penetration that was caulked instead of sealed, a run that was stapled along the ground instead of buried, a power supply left where the sprinkler hits it, or a receptacle without a proper in-use cover that trips every time it rains. All of that is electrical work, and it is why the question that decides how your lighting looks in year five is who installs it. The winter benefit nobody puts on the spec sheet
The worst part of Christmas lights in Alberta was never the electricity. It was the ladder: on a frozen driveway in November, and again in January when the clips are iced to the eaves and the strand is half dead. Permanent lighting removes that job permanently. The house is warm white every evening from October to March without anyone going outside, it turns red and green for the two weeks that matter, and it switches back from the couch. There is nothing to store, nothing to untangle and nothing to replace in the garage in September.

Most people who want the house lit for December are asking in September and October.
