01 · The Everyday

Warm white,
every single night.

Most people buy permanent lighting for the holidays and end up using it every day of the year. A clean line of warm white along your rooflines does what landscape lighting does for a garden: it gives the house shape after dark, makes the address easy to find, and lights the walk to your door without a floodlight glaring at the street. It comes on at dusk and goes off at bedtime, on its own, all year.

02 · Every Season

One system.
Every occasion.

Orange and purple for Halloween. Red and green through December. Blue and white for a birthday, green for St. Patrick’s Day, red and white on Canada Day, or your team’s colours on game night. Every zone is individually addressable, so you pick a scene in the app and the house changes in seconds — no ladder, no clips, no boxes in the garage.

03 · After Dark

A house that isn’t dark.

From October to March most Alberta homes are dark from four in the afternoon until morning. A dark front reads as empty — to the courier who can’t find your number, to a guest walking up an icy path, and to anyone paying attention to which houses stay black all evening.

Warm white along the rooflines changes that for a few dollars of electricity a month. The house has an outline. The address is findable. The walk to the door is lit without a floodlight glaring into the street or your neighbour’s bedroom.

  • On every night, without anyone remembering. A dusk‑to‑bedtime schedule is set once and runs itself, all year.
  • On from anywhere. The app works from a hotel room exactly as it does from your kitchen, so a week away doesn’t mean a week of a black house.
  • Full brightness in one tap. If you want the whole front lit right now, that is a button on your phone rather than a walk outside.
  • Zones, not one switch. Every light is individually addressable, so the garage side can behave differently from the front door.
What this is not. This is architectural lighting, not a security system. It will not replace a motion floodlight over a back gate, a camera, or an alarm. If you want those as well, we are electricians — we can wire them on the same visit and put them on the same quote.

04 · Built For Here

No ladder
in November.

The worst part of Christmas lights in Alberta isn’t the cost. It’s standing on a ladder on a frozen driveway in November, and doing it again in January when the clips are frozen to the eaves. Permanent lighting removes that job permanently.

  • Installed once, used for years. Gemstone Lights is a Calgary company and the system is designed for year-round outdoor use in this climate.
  • Nothing to store. No tangled boxes, no replacing a third of the strand every season because half of it failed in the garage.
  • Nothing to re-hang. When a scene changes, it changes in the app. The hardware never moves.
  • Wired properly the first time. Sealed penetrations and a clean connection matter more here than anywhere, and that is electrical work.

06 · The Price

$28 to $32 a foot, installed.

Most homes land between $28 and $32 per linear foot of lit roofline. That includes the Gemstone track and LEDs, installation by our own electricians, and both warranties. Add $500 for the controller that runs it from your phone, plus travel to your address and GST. Your exact number comes from your rooflines, which is why we ask for three photos.

What moves a home from $28 toward $32
  • Peaks and corners. Every gable, dormer and return is a cut, a join and a run back to the track. A long, straight fascia sits at $28; a roofline with six peaks sits nearer $32.
  • Height and pitch. Two‑storey eaves and steep roofs take longer and take more of the lift.
  • Fascia material. Stone, stucco and metal cladding mount more slowly than wood or vinyl.
  • The run to power. A short path to a sheltered outlet is simple; a long run around the house is not.
Worked example: a typical two‑storey front
117 ft of roofline × $28 to $32$3,276 – $3,744
Controller$500
Installed, before travel and GST$3,776 – $4,244

Front and sides, about 150 ft: $4,700 – $5,300. A full wraparound, about 300 ft: $8,900 – $10,100, and a large wraparound sometimes needs a second controller.

Canadian dollars, before GST. Homes outside the typical band — three storeys, unusual access, very long runs — are quoted individually, and we say so before we quote. Four worked examples, how to measure your own roofline and the ten-year comparison with seasonal lights are in our Alberta permanent lighting cost guide.

07 · Who Installs It

An electrical contractor.
Not a seasonal crew.

Almost nothing that goes wrong with permanent lighting is a product failure. It is the mounting, the sealing of the penetrations, the alignment of the track along an uneven fascia, and the connection back to power. All of that is electrical work, and most permanent lighting in Alberta is sold by lighting retailers or seasonal holiday-light crews who subcontract exactly that part.

Stellar Upgrades is a licensed electrical contractor with its own crew, supervised by a Red Seal Master Electrician, working on Alberta homes since 2018. We are the people who would be in your panel for a solar array or an EV charger. We do not subcontract, and we are still here to answer the phone in year five.

08 · The Warranty

In plain words.

Two companies, two jobs, both in writing. Central Alberta Lighting in Red Deer is an authorized Gemstone dealer. They supply the system and register your manufacturer warranty with Gemstone, so your product coverage is exactly the same as any other Gemstone installation. We do the electrical work, and we stand behind it ourselves.

If anything ever goes wrong, start with us.

We’ll tell you straight away whether it’s an installation issue we fix ourselves, or a product issue — and if it’s the product, we coordinate that claim for you rather than handing you a phone number.

Gemstone requires warranty registration within 30 days of installation; Central Alberta Lighting handles that as part of your job. The manufacturer warranty can transfer to the next owner of your home on Gemstone’s published terms (gemstonelights.com/warranty). Stellar’s 12-month installation warranty is separate and set out in writing with your quote.

09 · Beyond The Front

The back of the house
is where you live.

Most quotes stop at the street view, because that is the cheapest thing to sell. But the side you actually sit on is the back: the deck, the patio, the pool, the yard where people gather in July. Run the track along the rear rooflines and you get usable evening light out there every night of the summer, not just a display for the neighbours in December.

  • Front only — the classic. Curb appeal and holidays, the lowest entry point.
  • Front and sides — a fuller outline, and light down the walkways on both sides of the house.
  • Full home — including the rear, for patios, decks and pool areas that are dark for most of the year.

Tell us which you want on the form and the quote covers exactly that. If you are not sure, ask for the layout both ways and compare the two numbers.

10 · Before You Ask

Common questions.

Most homes land between $28 and $32 per linear foot of lit roofline, installed. That includes the Gemstone track and LEDs, installation by our own electricians, the 12‑month installation warranty and the manufacturer warranty. Add $500 for the controller, plus travel to your address and GST. What moves a home from $28 toward $32 is complexity: peaks, corners and dormers, two‑storey height and steep pitches, stone or stucco fascia, and how far the run to power is. A typical 117‑foot two‑storey front works out to $3,776 to $4,244 before travel and GST; front and sides at about 150 feet is $4,700 to $5,300. Homes outside the band — three storeys, unusual access — are quoted individually, and we say so up front. Send three photos through the form and you get the exact written number, free and with no obligation. The full arithmetic, with four worked examples, is in our Alberta permanent lighting cost guide.

A slim aluminum track is mounted under your eaves and colour-matched to your soffit and fascia. Inside it sits a row of individually controlled RGBWW LEDs — red, green, blue and warm white in every diode — spaced 9 inches apart, rated IP67 for water and run on UV‑rated cable so the system is built to sit outside permanently. A small controller connects to your Wi-Fi, and the Gemstone app lets you set colours, patterns, brightness and schedules. It stays up year-round, so it replaces both your seasonal string lights and the accent lighting most homes never get around to installing.

The track is chosen to match your trim colour and tucks under the eave, so from the street it reads as part of the house. Gemstone makes more than 30 track finishes matched against over 150 soffit and fascia colours, so there is almost always an exact match rather than a near one. Most people don’t notice it until the lights come on. We confirm the colour match with you before anything is ordered.

Yes. Gemstone Lights is a Calgary company and the system is built for year-round outdoor use in this climate, including snow, ice and deep cold. The bigger winter benefit is what you stop doing: there is no ladder in November, nothing to take down in January, and nothing to store.

Stellar’s own electricians, the same in-house crew behind more than 550 solar, battery and EV charger projects across Alberta since 2018, supervised by a Red Seal Master Electrician. We don’t subcontract. The system itself comes from Central Alberta Lighting in Red Deer, an authorized Gemstone dealer, and we do the installation.

No, and here’s exactly how it works. Central Alberta Lighting in Red Deer is the authorized Gemstone dealer: they supply the system and register your manufacturer warranty, so your product coverage is identical to any other Gemstone installation. We’re a licensed electrical contractor, and we do the installation and back it for 12 months. Permanent lighting is wired to your home, so the part that decides whether it still looks right in year five is the electrical work — and that’s the part we own.

Two warranties, from two companies. Stellar covers the installation and workmanship for 12 months. Gemstone covers the product — a lifetime warranty on the LED lights, which it rates at 50,000 hours, and 10 years on the track, controller and power components — registered for you by Central Alberta Lighting within 30 days of installation, and transferable to the next owner on Gemstone’s published terms. If something goes wrong, call us first and we’ll sort out which warranty applies.

Here is the arithmetic. Each LED draws between 0.25 and 1 watt depending on the colour, and a typical 117‑foot front elevation takes about 150 lights — so roughly 150 watts at full brightness. Run that six hours a night and it is about 27 kilowatt‑hours a month, which at an Alberta all‑in residential rate of roughly 16 to 20 cents a kilowatt‑hour comes to about four or five dollars a month. Gemstone publishes $4.34 a month, or $52.80 a year, for the same case. Most colour and architectural scenes draw 25 to 60 per cent less than full brightness, so in practice it is usually less again. For comparison, a single string of old incandescent C9 bulbs can pull more than that on its own.

No. The Gemstone Hub app is included with the system and there is no subscription, no monthly fee and no paywalled features. You buy the system once and the app stays free for as long as you own it.

Partly, and we would rather be straight with you about where the line is. A lit front elevation every night means your house is never the dark one on the street, your address is findable, and the walk to the door is lit — and you can bring the whole front up to full brightness from the app from anywhere, which is genuinely useful when you are away. What it is not is a security system. It will not replace a motion floodlight over a back gate, a camera, or an alarm. If you want those as well, we are a licensed electrical contractor and we can wire them on the same visit and put them on the same quote.

Yes. The Gemstone Hub app runs on iOS and Android and gives you 16 million colours, more than 14,000 ready‑made patterns — holidays, seasons, team colours — and a custom mixer if none of them is quite right. You can set sunset‑to‑bedtime schedules and switch the whole house or individual zones on and off from anywhere. We set it up on your phone and walk you through it before we leave.

Your town or address, which parts of the house you’d like lit, and a few daytime photos of the front — and the sides too, if you want wraparound coverage. You can upload the photos right after you submit the form. If you’d rather talk it through first, book a short call and we’ll take it from there.

Most homes are a single day once the system is on site. The timeline from approving your quote to install day depends on the season and your location, and we confirm a date when you approve the written quote rather than promising one before we’ve seen your home.

Yes, and it’s the efficient way to do it. The same crew installs all of it, so one project can cover more than one upgrade and you’re only scheduling one set of visits. Mention it in the notes and we’ll quote them together.
