Why the Emporia Pro is a different kind of install
Most Level 2 chargers are one device on one circuit. The Emporia Pro is two: the charger, plus the Vue 3 whole-home energy monitor that ships in the box. The Vue 3 wires into your electrical panel with measurement clamps on your mains and circuits — that’s what gives you live, circuit-level energy for the whole house in one app, lets the charger charge from excess solar, and syncs charging to off-peak rates. It’s genuinely useful — and it’s genuinely electrical work inside your panel, which is why who installs it matters more than with a plain charger.
PowerSmart: the feature that saves most panel upgrades
The most expensive surprise in EV charger quotes is the panel upgrade — $3,000+ when a 48A charger doesn’t fit a 100A service. The Emporia Pro’s PowerSmart load management is built in: it watches your home’s total load and auto-adjusts the charge rate to your panel’s service rating, so the panel is never overloaded. In practice this means most homes — including older 100A panels — avoid the upgrade entirely. But it only works when it’s configured against a real load calculation for your panel. That’s part of every Stellar install, confirmed at the free assessment before we quote.
The legal part: permits
A Level 2 charger runs on a dedicated 240V circuit, which makes the install electrical work under Alberta’s Safety Codes Act — a municipal electrical permit and inspection are required, and the permit goes to a licensed electrical contractor with a Master Electrician of record (or a homeowner on their own home). We file the permit and attend the inspection on every install; you chase nothing.
