Search “battery installer Edmonton” and you’ll get a wall of ads that all say roughly the same thing. What none of them explain is the licensing structure underneath: who is actually allowed to connect a 20 kWh energy storage system to your electrical service in this province, whose name ends up on the permit, and what happens when those are two different companies. We’ve installed batteries across the Edmonton region since the product category existed — here’s the whole picture, including the parts that don’t favour anyone’s marketing.
The short legal answer: it’s electrical work, full stop
A home battery is not an appliance you plug in. Its hybrid inverter wires into your main electrical panel, it typically adds a backup gateway or protected-loads sub-panel between your meter and your breakers, and when the grid fails it takes over your house in under 20 milliseconds. Under Alberta’s Safety Codes Act, that is electrical work — which means every battery install in the province requires a municipal electrical permit before the work starts and a passed inspection after it’s done. There is no battery-sized exemption, no “low-voltage” loophole, and no legitimate installer who will suggest skipping it.
Alberta municipalities issue that electrical permit to exactly two kinds of applicants:
- A licensed electrical contractor. To hold an electrical contractor licence in Alberta, a company must have a Master Electrician of record — a named, certified individual who is professionally accountable for every permit the company pulls. This is who installs the overwhelming majority of home batteries in the province.
- A homeowner who owns and lives in the home, doing their own work on their own residence under a homeowner permit. Legal — with real caveats we’ll get to honestly below.
That’s the whole list. A handyman, an unlicensed crew, a friend who “does electrical,” or a landlord working on a rental property cannot legally install a home battery in Alberta. An unpermitted install isn’t a paperwork technicality either: it can void your home insurance, complicate a future sale, and leave a grid-interactive power source in your house that no inspector ever checked.
“My solar company will handle it” — worth a second look
Here’s the part of the industry’s structure that surprises homeowners. “Solar company” is a marketing term, not a licence class. Some solar companies are licensed electrical contractors with their own electricians on payroll. Many others — entirely legally — are sales and project-management organizations: they sell the system, then subcontract the electrical work to whichever licensed contractor is available for that job.
Subcontracting isn’t inherently bad work. But it changes who is accountable to you in ways that matter more for a battery than for anything else on your house:
- The permit holder isn’t the company you signed with. The electrical permit — and the Master Electrician professionally responsible for your install — belongs to the subcontractor. If something needs correcting in year 3, your contract points at one company and your permit points at another.
- The crew can change job to job. The subcontractor who did your neighbour’s tidy install may not be the one who shows up at yours.
- Batteries are the deep end of residential electrical. A straightforward solar array is well-trodden work. A battery adds a grid-interactive hybrid inverter, backup switchover configuration, a protected-loads sub-panel, and the Canadian Electrical Code’s Section 64 energy-storage rules — including Rule 64-918, which caps residential storage at 20 kWh per unit and 40 kWh per dwelling, and Alberta’s STANDATA Variance 21-ECV-064-900-ESS, which governs where in the house the battery may live (attached garage: yes, standard; below grade: no). A sales organization doesn’t carry that competence in-house — it rents it, install by install.
None of this names or knocks any particular company — it’s simply how the industry is structured, and it’s why the single most revealing question you can ask any bidder is not “how much?” but “are you the licensed electrical contractor, and who is the Master Electrician of record on my permit?” A company that does its own electrical answers in one sentence. A company that subcontracts usually answers with a pause.
The DIY question, answered honestly
Can you install your own battery? If you own the home and live in it, Alberta’s homeowner electrical permit makes it legal — and we won’t pretend otherwise. Here’s what you’d be taking on:
- The technical scope. This isn’t swapping a receptacle. You’d be interconnecting a grid-interactive hybrid inverter with your service, building and load-calculating a protected-loads sub-panel, configuring anti-islanding and backup switchover, and doing it all to CEC Section 64 — then defending your work to the municipal inspector.
- The warranty. Manufacturers generally require the system to be commissioned and registered by an authorized installer for the 10-year warranty to stand. A battery you wire yourself may work perfectly and still carry no meaningful warranty — on a five-figure component.
- The insurance conversation. Your insurer will expect a permitted, inspected energy storage system disclosed. “Self-installed, but inspected” is a conversation; “self-installed, no permit” is a claim denial waiting for a fire adjuster.
Our honest read: the homeowner permit exists for the rare electrician-by-trade who happens to be installing in their own house. For everyone else, the risk-to-savings ratio is upside down — the labour you’d save is a fraction of the system cost, and the warranty alone is worth more than the labour.
The 7 questions that vet any Alberta battery installer

1. Who is the Master Electrician of record on my permit?

2. Are you the licensed electrical contractor, or is the electrical subcontracted?

3. Is your pricing posted, or consultation-only?
Consultation-only pricing isn’t automatically a red flag — but posted pricing means the number can’t stretch to fit your postal code. 4. Which code rules cap my system size?
The correct answer cites CEC Rule 64-918: 20 kWh per unit, 40 kWh per dwelling — which is why the practical Alberta ceiling is about 39.8 kWh across two EP Cubes. 5. Where can the battery legally be installed?
The correct answer cites Alberta STANDATA Variance 21-ECV-064-900-ESS: the attached garage is the standard residential location, and below-grade installs are off the table. 6. Who registers my warranty?

A battery is a 10-year-plus relationship. A sales organization that subcontracted your install may not exist — or may not know who wired your house — when a firmware or service question lands in 2034. The honest section: when you don’t need a battery
The most useful thing an installer can tell you is when not to buy. Three Alberta truths first:
A battery does not lower an Alberta power bill by itself. Alberta has no residential time-of-use rates, so there’s no cheap-overnight-power arbitrage to run. Here a battery earns its keep two ways: outage resilience and solar self-consumption (storing your own panels’ afternoon surplus for the evening). Anyone selling you an Alberta battery as a bill-cutter is importing Ontario math.
Alberta outages are real but rare. The recent record: AESO declared a grid alert on January 13, 2024, pushing a province-wide emergency alert to every phone at 6:44 p.m., and on April 5, 2024 actual rotating outages shed about 244 MW between 8:53 and 9:16 a.m. Meanwhile the wires themselves are excellent — EPCOR’s Edmonton system averaged 0.58 hours of outage per customer for all of 2023, and FortisAlberta customers average under 1.3 hours a year. There are no Alberta battery rebates in 2026. No provincial program, no federal grant, and municipal CEIP financing does not apply to batteries. Any quote that leans on a rebate to close the deal is quoting a different province.
So skip the battery — for now — if all three of these describe you: outages on your wires are rare and short, you have no solar (and aren’t adding it), and nothing in the house — medical equipment, a home office, a sump pump, livestock systems — makes an outage expensive. A battery makes clear sense when solar is in the picture (bundling with a new install saves $1,000), when an outage has a real cost, or when rural wires make “rare and short” untrue.
