Solar & Battery · Okotoks, Foothills County

The town that proved solar
works in Alberta.

Okotoks put itself on the world solar map in 2007 with Drake Landing — a neighbourhood heated almost entirely by the sun. We're here for the simpler modern version: LONGi rooftop solar, EP Cube batteries and EV chargers on FortisAlberta net metering, installed by master electricians with a lifetime leak-proof guarantee.

Why Okotoks works for solar

A solar town before solar was cool.

Between southern Alberta sun, FortisAlberta's clean micro-generation process, and a town that literally wrote the Canadian case study on solar heating, Okotoks might be the easiest place in the province to say yes to panels.

Southern Alberta sun

We model roughly 1,250 kWh per kW per year in the Okotoks belt — comfortably ahead of the Edmonton baseline our payback math was built on.

FortisAlberta net metering

Bi-directional meter, kWh-for-kWh export credits banked up to 12 months, all under the provincial Micro-Generation Regulation — paperwork we file every week.

The Drake Landing standard

This town set a world record for solar heating in 2015. We treat every Okotoks roof like it has that reputation to keep.

How it works from Okotoks

Your quote happens on a screen,
not at your kitchen table.

Distance never touches your price or your timeline. The whole assessment happens over Google Meet before anyone drives anywhere — you see your design, your price, your savings and your warranties on screen, and a site visit only happens once the numbers already make sense to you.

ITell us about your home

A 30-second form — name and number is all it takes. PJ follows up personally inside 24 hours.

IISend a recent power bill

A photo or PDF by text or email. Your real usage sets the system size — we never design from guesses.

IIIGoogle Meet walkthrough

20–30 minutes on screen: your roof by satellite, your design, your price, your savings, your warranties. We decline roughly 10% of homes right here when the math doesn't work.

IVSite visit, then the exact quote

Only once the numbers make sense to you do we drive to Okotoks — confirm the roof and panel in person, and put one final number in writing.

They didn’t try to sell me a generic package; instead, they provided a personalized design based on my actual utility bills.

The company actually called us after two years just to check if everything was still working properly.

Around town

Okotoks, from the river up.

From the Sheep River valley to the newest phases on the edges, here's how Okotoks breaks down for solar.

IDrake Landing & the north side

The neighbourhood that made Okotoks famous in solar circles — and its rooftops remain excellent PV candidates in their own right.

IICimarron & Crystal Shores

Established family communities with generous, well-oriented rooflines — textbook 7–10 kW designs with strong payback.

IIIAir Ranch & the east side

Larger lots and larger roofs — room for systems that cover the house, the garage and an EV with margin to spare.

IVSheep River valley & Foothills acreages

Valley lots get a proper shading study first; open county ground between here and High River is prime for a true-south ground-mount.

Okotoks questions

The Drake Landing questions.

Okotoks is FortisAlberta territory, and net metering runs under the same provincial Micro-Generation Regulation we work with across Alberta: Fortis installs a bi-directional meter, every exported kWh earns a credit at your retail rate, and credits bank up to 12 months so summer surplus offsets winter use. We file the whole application for you.
It did — and it's a fair reason to expect more from any installer working here. Drake Landing Solar Community, built in Okotoks in 2007, was the first neighbourhood in North America heated almost entirely by seasonal solar storage, setting a world record with over 90% of its space heating from the sun. Today's rooftop PV is a different, simpler technology, but the lesson stands: solar genuinely works at this latitude, and Okotoks proved it to the world before most of Alberta was paying attention.
The same as Edmonton and Calgary — no travel surcharge. Our $2.80/W cash rate applies to typical 7–8 kW systems and up; smaller arrays run higher per watt because fixed costs spread over fewer panels, so a 5 kW system typically lands in the $16,000–$20,000 range. Southern Alberta sun works in your favour: we model roughly 1,250 kWh per kW per year here. Run your numbers →
The assessment happens over Google Meet — your bills, your roof by satellite, your design, your price and warranties, all on screen before anyone drives anywhere. Site visits and installs run out of our Red Deer office on the same weekly QEII loop that covers Calgary and High River. Okotoks pricing is identical to Edmonton pricing.
Yes — acreages between Okotoks, High River and the 22X are regular stops for us, and open county ground is often the best solar real estate there is: a true-south ground-mount sized to the house, the shop and the well pump, with no roof penetrations at all. One rural note: a few properties around here take power from an REA rather than Fortis, which changes the export rate — we confirm whose lines you're on before designing.

Okotoks · Bills & Rates

Why is your Okotoks power bill so high?

Less than half of an Okotoks electricity bill is the power you actually used. The rest is delivery — transmission, distribution (including a fixed daily charge), rate riders and the local access fee — none of which you can shop away by switching retailers. Our line-by-line breakdown shows exactly where your money goes, and what rooftop solar zeroes out versus what it doesn’t.
