The Border City · Lloydminster, AB

One city, two provinces, one sunny roof.

Lloydminster is the only city built right on a provincial border — and that line down 50th Avenue decides who wires your house. On the Alberta side it's ATCO Electric, with Alberta's net-metering program. That's the side we install on, and it's a genuinely good one for solar: high northeast power rates, open prairie sky and long summer days.

Marker 01 · Why here

Border-city sun, northeast rates.

The Alberta side of Lloydminster sits in ATCO Electric's northeast territory, where delivery charges run among the steepest in the province. On a bill that stings — but the moment panels go up it flips: the higher your rate per kilowatt-hour, the more value each one you make yourself carries. In the Border City, that spread is a wide one.

Add wide-open prairie with clean southern exposure and long summer days, and a Lloydminster roof is a strong place to put solar. Cold helps too: panels convert more efficiently in it, so a clear Border-City winter day pulls its weight.

Marker 02 · The cost

What it costs, plainly.

No mystery pricing. A typical build comes in at $2.80 a watt cash, with the smallest systems running slightly higher per watt since fewer panels share the fixed costs. Every quote is sized from a full twelve months of your actual ATCO bills rather than a brochure figure.

Marker 03 · Payment

How you pay for it.

Cash earns the best price, but it isn't required up front. Pick the route that suits you — the system is yours either way, and a critter guard plus a lifetime leak-proof roof guarantee come with every install.

Cash

$2.80/W — the cheapest the system will ever be, and the quickest to break even.

$0-down loan

Financeit fronts it at a modest rate; the payment often sits below the bill it replaces.

Roll it in

A refinance or HELOC, the cheapest borrowing there is.

Marker 04 · Which side of the line

The detail only a border city has.

Here's the one thing a Lloydminster solar quote has to get right: which province your meter is in. On the Alberta side your distribution utility is ATCO Electric, and you go on Alberta's net metering under the provincial Micro-Generation Regulation — a bi-directional meter, every exported kilowatt-hour credited kWh-for-kWh, unused credits carried twelve months. The retail side is deregulated, so keep whatever retailer you like.

On the Saskatchewan side the wires belong to SaskPower, with Saskatchewan's own net-metering program and rules — a different system entirely. We install on the Alberta side of Lloydminster, where the program and the math are strongest, and we file your ATCO micro-generation application for you.

Marker 05 · Coverage

Alberta-side Lloydminster and the county.

AB · in town

Alberta-side neighbourhoods

Established streets and newer subdivisions west of the border — ATCO-connected rooftop work on most of the housing stock.

County

County of Vermilion River acreages

Open prairie lots ideal for a ground-mount sized to the house, a shop and a well pump together.

Hwy 16 W

Kitscoty, Marwayne & Dewberry

Alberta towns and farms west toward Vermilion — rooftop in the village, ground-mount on the land.

South

Paradise Valley & Streamstown

Acreages and properties south of the city — the same work, the same standard, the same crew.

Marker 06 · Add-ons

Battery & EV, briefly.

Open prairie means wind, and rural ATCO lines around the city go down more often than the city core. Solar alone shuts off in an outage for safety; paired with an EP Cube battery the house keeps running, with automatic cutover in under 20 milliseconds.

Battery backup
EP Cube

Whole-home backup that rides out the storm and stores your own sun for after dark.

EV charging
Wallbox Pulsar

A 40A or 48A charger — fuel the daily drive on sunshine instead of gas.

They didn't try to sell me a generic package; instead, they provided a personalized design based on my actual utility bills.

We installed our solar system almost two years ago, and it's performing exactly the same as day one.

Hey if you are going solar I highly recommend this company as it's not here to just take my money and actually help me save money on my bills.

Solar in Lloydminster, answered.

On the Alberta side, your wires (distribution) utility is ATCO Electric — the company for north and east-central Alberta. On the Saskatchewan side it's SaskPower instead. Power retailing in Alberta is deregulated, so the retailer on your bill remains entirely your choice. With solar on the Alberta side, ATCO fits a bi-directional meter and you go on net metering under the provincial Micro-Generation Regulation: every surplus kWh exported is credited kWh-for-kWh and banked up to 12 months toward winter.
It changes everything about the paperwork. Lloydminster straddles the Alberta–Saskatchewan line, and the two provinces run completely separate utilities and net-metering programs — ATCO Electric and Alberta's Micro-Generation Regulation on the west side, SaskPower and Saskatchewan's program on the east. We install on the Alberta side, where the net-metering math is strongest, and we confirm your address is west of the border before we design anything.
Our cash price works out to $2.80/W at the usual home size of 7–8 kW. Going smaller costs slightly more per watt — on a 3–6 kW system the fixed costs are shared by fewer panels, putting a 5 kW around $16,000–$20,000 — and acreage or ground-mount projects reach $40,000–$50,000+. A critter guard and our lifetime leak-proof roof guarantee are built into that cash figure, with $0-down financing through Financeit on the table. And because ATCO's northeast delivery charges run high, every kWh you offset is worth more in Lloydminster than in the city.
Because every kilowatt-hour your panels make is one you don't buy at ATCO's northeast delivery rate — among the highest in Alberta. The pricier the grid power, the more each self-generated kWh is worth, so the same system that saves an Edmonton home a certain amount saves a Lloydminster home more. High rates sting on the bill but speed up your solar payback.
For many homes near the city, yes. Open prairie means wind, and rural ATCO lines see more frequent outages than the urban core. Solar paired with an EP Cube battery keeps your home running with automatic cutover in under 20 milliseconds, holding heat, water, fridge and freezer through an outage. On an acreage, that resilience is often worth as much as the savings.
Yes — we cover the Alberta side of Lloydminster and the surrounding County of Vermilion River, including Kitscoty, Marwayne, Dewberry, Paradise Valley and Streamstown. In town it's usually an ATCO-connected rooftop install; on county acreages we build ground-mounts sized to the whole property. We handle the ATCO micro-generation application either way.

Why is your Lloydminster power bill so high?

Less than half of a Lloydminster electricity bill is the power you actually used. The rest is delivery — transmission, distribution (including a fixed daily charge), rate riders and the municipal local access fee — none of which you can shop away by switching retailers. Our line-by-line breakdown shows exactly where your money goes in Lloydminster, and the honest version of what rooftop solar zeroes out (the energy charge) versus what it doesn’t (the fixed connection costs).
